Prince Harry Tells Oprah He Was Afraid Of 'History Repeating Itself'

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will speak about their decision to step back from royal life in a "no holds barred" interview with Oprah Winfrey. CBS released two teasers for the upcoming special, which will be two hours long, showing the Duke of Sussex discussing how his mother, Princess Diana, and her tragic passing influenced his historic decision.

"My biggest concern was history repeating itself," Harry tells Oprah in the first preview. This isn't the first time Harry has used this exact phrase to describe his fears that the same fate that befell Princess Diana—she tragically lost her life in a 1997 car crash in Paris, France while being chased by paparazzi—could happen to Meghan and their young son, Archie.

In a second preview, Harry tells Oprah how much he empathizes with Diana's own experience leaving the Royal Family, as well. Following her split from Prince Charles, Diana was left to navigate the intrusive Brtish tabloids on her own. "For me, I'm just really relieved and happy to be sitting here, talking to you with my wife by my side," Harry says while holding on tight to Meghan's hand. "Because I can't begin to imagine what it must have been like for her [Diana] going through this process by herself all those years ago. Because it has been unbelievably tough for the two of us, but at least we have each other."

Harry and Meghan also paid tribute to his mother in a more subtle way during the interview, as well. Meghan can be seen wearing a bracelet that once belonged to the Princess of Wales. It's actually the same bracelet Harry used to create Meghan's engagement ring—he took two diamonds from the bracelet to be used as side stones on the new piece of jewelery. According to People's sources, the Sussexes wanted Meghan to wear the bracelet for the sit-down with Oprah so Diana could be with them.
