Avocado Prices May Lower If US Gets More Avocados From Mexico

Prices for avocados have been insane as they soared to over $2 a piece. Yikes!

According to ABC 7, for the past 25 years, all avocados came from the region of Michoacán but now people in the United States could get a chance to try avocados from Jalisco. Growers and packers in Jalisco have expressed interest to provide more consistent production levels and stability prices for avocados since they have been fluctuating with a seasonal supply shortage.

"When we were talking about very high prices a month ago, it was because the market wasn't getting enough supply," said Javier Medina Villanueva, president of the Jalisco Avocado Export Association. "So we believe that the entry of Jalisco will close that supply shortage. ... I think prices will stabilize."

Consumers won't recognize the difference in avocados immediately because they will still say "avocados from Mexico," which has been their promo for years from Michoacán. Mexico currently supplies 92% of U.S imports of the fruit. Head to ABC 7 for more.
