Twitter Debuts 'Official Verification Checkmark' For High-Profile Accounts

Twitter has launched their new label where users will be able to see authentic high-profile accounts.

“A lot of folks have asked about how you’ll be able to distinguish between @TwitterBlue subscribers with blue checkmarks and accounts that are verified as official, which is why we’re introducing the ‘Official’ label to select accounts when we launch,” tweeted Esther Crawford, the Twitter VP leading the revamped Twitter Blue.

To show a profile is authentic there will be a gray "official" label right under the username in both the persons' tweets and bio. Crawford explained who will be getting the "official" label and that it's not available for purchase like the blue checkmark. Those who will be able to get the official label include: government accounts, commercial companies, business partners, major media outlets, publisher, and some public figures. This news comes after a week when Twitter's new CEO, Elon Musk, announced that users will be charged for that blue checkmark.

Musk is really changing things up since he acquired the social media platform as the blue check mark used to show an account was verified. Now anyone can basically get a blue check mark on their account, all they have to do is pay $7.99 a month. This option has yet to be announced when it'll be available and a blue checkmark is not the only thing users will get for the $8/month. The blue checkmark comes with some bonus features like fewer ads and ability to give their tweets a higher visibility from those who are not subscribers. A lot of people are concerned over this new "official" label because impersonations and scams could spread easier as the color of the official verification of the account is not as obvious as the blue checkmark since its gray and blends in with the profile.
