Public Health Says There Could Be A Monkeypox Case In Sacramento County

According to KTLA 5, Sacramento County Division of Public Health is waiting on results from the CDC and the California Department of Public Health as there might be a case of monkeypox detected in the Sacramento County.

Monkeypox is currently related to travel in Europe as the first case was found there and the virus is similar to smallpox but it is less severe. There are vaccines available for the virus, which one is specifically for smallpox and the newer one is for monkeypox and can be ordered through the CDC.

As of right now, the contract tracing is still being determined but the virus seems to be less transmissible compared to COVID-19. However, monkeypox transmission can occur when a person comes into contact with someone contaminated with the virus and it can enter through broken skin, respiratory tract or mucous membranes. Symptoms may not appear for about 7-14 days after the person becomes infected and can last from two to four weeks. Below are some of the symptoms of monkeypox:

  • fever
  • headache
  • muscle aches
  • backache
  • swollen lymph nodes
  • chills
  • exhaustion
  • rash can appear and spread 1-3 days after a fever appears.

For more information visit the CDC or CDPH.
