Welcome to 2020, where in-person meetings and meet-ups have been replaced with video tele conferencing. If you're self-conscious about how you look, this can be a nightmare. If this is you, you definitely aren't alone. Experts say if video conferencing is triggering your self-image issues, there are some things you can do.
- Try to focus on the purpose of the meeting. Everyone else on the conference call or meet up is there for a reason and they really aren't focused on you, especially what you look like. They're focusing on the task at hand.
- Put a post it note over your face. No one else knows you're doing that. If you're focusing too much on YOUR appearance, block it out.
- Don't be afraid to cut the video off. Use audio only.
- Keep in mind that no one looks their best during a video call - the lighting, the angles, nothing is perfect. There are people that are more photogenic than others. It's possible you look better in real life than in 2D and that's ok.
At the end of the day, we are pretty narcissistic and are probably staring at ourselves more than others.
