Ankeny Seventh Grade literacy teacher, Nate Evans, was profiled on Good Morning America this week. He started Woodworking With A Purpose. The purpose is furnishing desks to students who don't have a comfortable place to do virtual learning. He got the idea through virtual teaching as he noticed students using their beds and other non-condusive to learning space to do their school work.
He built 600 desks initially with money from his own pocket until others noticed what he was doing and started donating to the cause. He partnered with Ankeny Christian Church where volunteers helped build desks. There is a goal to build 2,020 desks now. Each desk costs between $25 and $30 to make. If you want to donate or volunteer to make desks, you can get information on Woodworking With A Purpose's Facebook page.
